Hi. I'm new but I HAD to take part in the challenge because work has been slow this last 30 minutes. I tried to challenge myself with this one, not only with the 30 minute timer, but also with no dialog. I tend to get too wordy once I had people chatting.
Title: A Separate Beginning
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Um, it's AU, obviously. I guess it would be best if you've seen Only the Lonely and Amateur Night.
It took everything in Natalie to let him just walk by and not say a word. She desperately wanted to acknowledge him, to point out the fact that she knew he was testing her. But the little voice in the back of her head told her that it would not be a smart idea. Every ounce of knowledge she had gained from horror movies and folk stories seemed erroneous, because they dictated that he would have killed her for just being in the same room as him when he rose from the cold table in her lab. But he had not harmed her. Instead, he tried to hypnotize her, and for some reason, she knew it was for the best. And so she let him pass unhindered.

As he walked past her, the vampire known as Nicholas frowned slightly. She had not even blinked in recognition. He knew that this was probably for the greater good, but he remotely wished that she *had* remembered him. She had been smart and inquisitive. He liked that. But if he had let her keep the knowledge of his existence, then everything he had liked about her would been destroyed by the Enforcers. He couldn't have that. He wouldn't be responsible for the death of even one more mortal.
Blinking out of his thoughts, he realized that his wandering had led him to the front of the police precinct. He found himself standing here a lot. For some reason, it seemed to draw him in. He let his mind wander back to his time in Chicago. He had loved working as a police officer then. Everything about it had been exciting and new, even the training. He would have stayed to reach detective if it had not been for a few too many people noticing his lack of aging.
Then it finally hit him. She was a coroner and probably worked for the district. He could see her again if he wanted. The answer was right in front of him. Squaring his shoulders, he strode up the steps of the station and walked into the building.

The captain waved her over when she stopped in to drop off a report. He gestured to the visitor sitting in the chair across from his desk and made introductions.
Nick extended his hand and smiled warmly. He was right: she was the county coroner. Working with her was going to be incredible. She could never know though.
Natalie shook the offered hand. He didn't harm her. He himself was harmed saving others. And now, here he was, getting ready to go out to protect and serve. She returned the smile. Working with him was going to be incredible. He could just never know she knew.
